There are over 20 post-secondary institutions in Charlotte, and even though they don't all offer environmental programs, they do contribute to an overall scholastic feeling in the city, where people enjoy learning, culture, and camaraderie. For associate's degrees and certificates, check out Central Piedmont Community College which offers an AS degree in GIS Geographic Information Systems and more. Johnson C. Smith University offers degrees in biology and chemistry. Queens University of Charlotte has an environmental biology degree, as well as concentrations available in environmental science and anthropology. The University of North Carolina Charlotte is probably the dominant school in the city, with engineering, science, health, and architecture programs relevant to the environment. One interesting program is the Ph.D. in Infrastructure and Environmental Systems – emphasizing the understanding of environmental science behind design and infrastructure management.
Environmental companies include URS Corp., Conestoga-Rovers & Associates, Dewberry, the Geoscience Group, and Stantec Consulting Service. Employment projections for Mecklenburg County from 2002-2012 indicate that although natural resource and mining jobs are taking a hit, support service jobs for forestry and agriculture will rise by 2.68%. The industry group “professional, scientific and technical services” is also expected to do well, with a 2.93% job increase. Waste management and remediation jobs are to rise by 2.67% annually.

Charlotte, North Carolina, is a big city with a close-knit feel. There are over 550,000 people in the city proper and 1.5 million people in the surrounding area. It is one of the up-and-coming cities of the South, with a great nightlife, excellent dining and shopping, escapes to nature close by, and more.
